# Updating Orbit

Check for releases, download an update, and restart after saving your work.

## Check for an update

Open **Settings → About**, or **Help → About Orbit & Updates**, and select **Check for updates**. Orbit shows whether it is current, a version is available, or the check failed.

Update checks need a network connection. If you are using a development build, automatic updates may be unavailable.

## Download and install

1. When a release is available, select **Download update**.
2. Wait for the download to finish.
3. Save your project work and save or discard pending settings changes.
4. Select **Restart and install**.
5. Review the restart prompt and confirm when ready.

Orbit restarts to install the downloaded update. Save work in other open windows before confirming. If settings are still saving or drafts remain, finish them before restarting.

## Failed checks or downloads

Use **Retry update check** if the check fails. Verify your connection and retry after a temporary feed error. If necessary, download the current installer for your processor from the [download page](/download/) and replace the app in Applications after quitting Orbit.

Keep the local workspace data when replacing the application. Export a workspace archive before manual cleanup or moving to another machine.

## Release information

The About section shows your installed version. The website footer and download page show the version currently available to download, which may be newer. Read the [changelog](/changelog/) to review changes before updating.
