# Task lists and board layout

Arrange your task board into lists that match the way you work.

## Create and edit lists

Open **Tasks → Add a list**, enter its name, choose a colour, and select **Add list**. Each project has its own board layout, so you can use a simple “To do / Done” board or stages that fit your workflow.

Use a list's menu and **Edit list** to rename it or change its colour, then save. Cards keep their descriptions and attachments when you reorganise lists.

## Reorder lists

Drag the list's handle to a new position. Alternatively, open its menu and choose **Move list left** or **Move list right**. These operations save the board order immediately.

Use [card movement](/guide/tasks/cards/) to move work between stages. Renaming a list changes its label; it is separate from moving cards.

## Delete a list

1. Open the list menu and select **Delete list**.
2. If it contains cards, choose **Move remaining cards to** and select another list.
3. Confirm **Delete list**.

Cards in a populated list must be moved to a destination. Add another list first if no destination is available. Deleting an empty list needs no destination.

## Defaults for new projects

Open **Settings → Task columns** to set the initial list names, colours, and order for future projects. Use **Restore default columns** to return that settings draft to Orbit's defaults, then save.

Changing defaults does not rewrite existing boards. Edit an existing project's lists from its Tasks section. See [project defaults](/guide/settings/project-defaults/) for the distinction between task columns and project statuses.
