An Orbit project keeps the work for a website, app, client, or idea together. It can contain tasks, notes, documents, files, links, secrets, and several repositories. You can start with just a name and add the rest later.
Create the project
- Select New project, or press ⌘ N.
- Enter a name, such as “Client website”, and choose a status.
- Optionally add a description, tags, an icon, or local folders. You can leave these for later.
- Select Create project.
Your project appears in the sidebar under its status. Open it to follow the remaining steps.
Add a task
- Open Tasks.
- Choose Add a card in a list, enter a title such as “Draft the homepage”, and select Add card.
- Open the saved card to add a description or attachments, then select Save changes.
- Move the card to another list as work progresses.
The initial lists are Backlog, To Do, In Progress, and Done unless you have changed the workspace defaults. You can rename and reorder them for this project.
Keep the useful context
In Overview, write a quick scratchpad note and wait for it to save. Use Add a link to keep a design, dashboard, or reference URL with the project.
For a longer brief, open Documents → New document and select Save document when finished. Use Assets to add supporting files. The scratchpad saves automatically; documents and card edits need an explicit save.
Connect your code when you need it
Open Sources → Add source. Choose a local folder, add a remote repository URL, or choose a repository from a connected GitHub or GitLab account, then select Save sources.
A local folder points to files already on your Mac. A remote URL identifies a repository hosted elsewhere; adding it does not download the code. Use Clone repository from its menu if you need a local copy. See folders and repositories for the full steps.
Come back to it
Select the project in the sidebar or press ⌘ K to search the workspace. Search can open a particular task or document directly. Your project remains available after you quit and reopen Orbit.
Free supports three saved projects, including archived projects. See Free and Pro if you need more.
