Finding your way around

Find your projects, learn what each section is for, and use the app menus.

Choose a project in the sidebar, then switch between its sections.

The project sidebar

The sidebar groups projects by status. Select a project to open it; use the group heading to collapse or expand a group. The sidebar menu offers Expand all groups, Collapse all groups, New project, Search workspace, and Settings.

Drag a project handle to reorder projects within its status group. With the handle focused, use the up and down arrow keys for the same operation. Reordering is unavailable while the sidebar search is active. Change a project’s status to move it to a different group.

Use the sidebar toggle to make more room. In narrow windows, the sidebar opens as an overlay.

Project sections

Section What it contains
Overview Scratchpad, links, unfinished tasks, documents, source summaries, checks, and the optional inbox.
Tasks Cards organised into lists, with descriptions and attachments.
Documents Markdown reference material and project decisions.
Assets Uploaded files and nested folders.
Sources Remote repositories, local folders, and connected repository activity.
Dependencies Package locations, available updates, and security findings.
Secrets Credentials grouped by environment and service, protected by your vault PIN.

The project header gives you access to project details and status. Right-click a project or item to open its context menu, or use its menu button where available. Hover over an icon button to see its label, or focus it with the keyboard.

Use Show more to expand a long project description and Show less to collapse it. Selecting a project tag opens the dashboard filtered by that tag.

Read the overview

Use Overview to resume work: open an unfinished task, jump to a document, follow a saved link, or review a package or folder needing attention. The latest-commit summary shows where the information came from and when Orbit checked it. Refresh the relevant folder or repository activity when you need a current result.

The scratchpad is for rough notes. Star useful links or documents to mark them as important. Repository inbox items appear when the inbox is enabled and activity is connected.

The macOS Workspace menu includes new project, dashboard, workspace search, and settings. Tools opens Connections or Tools & Runtimes. Help includes the tour and About Orbit & Updates.

Use the app’s back and forward controls to revisit screens. See the keyboard reference for faster navigation.

Undo supported changes

After some actions, including a status change, card move, or asset rename or move, a notification offers Undo. Select it within one minute to reverse that action. Undo may no longer be available if the project has changed since then.

Undo is specific to the action in the confirmation; it is not a general history or a recovery system for deleted projects, documents, files, or secrets. For an archive action that also saved project details, undo reverses the status change rather than discarding all the edited details.
