Documents and Markdown

Write reference documents, preview Markdown, import a folder, and turn selections into tasks.

Create a document

  1. Open Documents → New document.
  2. Enter a title and Markdown body.
  3. Use the preview control to check formatting.
  4. Select Save document.

Use documents for a brief, setup instructions, decisions, or recurring project knowledge. Unlike the scratchpad, the document editor uses an explicit save action. An empty saved document can be edited later to add content.

Edit, organise, and mark important

Select a document from the list, then Edit to change it. Save when finished. Switching away with a draft gives you the choice to save, discard, or keep editing.

Drag document titles to reorder them. For keyboard reordering, focus a title and press Option + ↑ or Option + ↓. Use the star to mark a document as important when it is a reference you frequently need.

Markdown basics

Markdown uses plain-text symbols for formatting: ## starts a heading, - starts a bullet, and backticks mark code. For example:

## Local setup

1. Install dependencies.
2. Start the development server.

- [Design reference](https://example.com/design)
- Use `pnpm dev` for local development.

Preview your document before saving if you have pasted a long section or code sample.

Markdown text fields continue a - bullet when you press Enter. Press Enter on an empty bullet to finish the list. Tab inserts an indent; with several lines selected, it indents those lines together. Each document body can contain up to 50,000 characters.

Import a Markdown folder

In the desktop app, choose Import Markdown folder and select a folder containing Markdown documents. Wait for import to finish, then review the resulting document list.

An import accepts up to 100 .md or .markdown files, each up to 200 KB. Split a larger collection into batches and keep document bodies within their character limit.

Import creates copies in Orbit. Editing an imported document does not update the original Markdown file, and changes to the original do not sync back to Orbit. Use workspace export to back up the documents stored in Orbit.

Create a task or remove a document

Select text in a saved document and use Create task from selection. Review the task draft before saving; the selection can be up to 10,000 characters.

Choose Delete to remove a document and confirm its title. This permanently removes the stored document. If a revision conflict appears, use the option to reload saved documents and keep the draft, then compare it before resaving. If the original was removed, you can create a new document from the draft.
